Born in northeast Philly and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Sharon moved to New York state in 2001 for undergrad at Sarah Lawrence College where she discovered her love of psychology, anthropology, and painting. After studying abroad in northern India during college and becoming PELT-TESOL certified in Thailand, Sharon worked at an international language school for adults as well as Queens public library system as a family literacy instructor for immigrant parents and pre-school aged children. For over six years she also instructed weekly open studio-style art classes for adults at a supportive housing unit.
In 2010 Sharon earned her Masters of Professional Studies in Creative Arts Therapy and Creativity Development at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. For several years after she provided home-based individual and family art therapy sessions for children and adolescents with emotional/behavioral disturbances and histories of trauma throughout Brooklyn. Since 2011, Sharon has also worked as a Sobriety Counselor/Creative Arts Therapist at an outpatient substance use disorder clinic in downtown Manhattan where she provides individual and group counseling for adolescents and adults with triple diagnosis--chemical addiction, mental illness, and developmental delays/traumatic brain injuries--as well as individual art therapy for behavioral health clients.
State licensed and board certified since 2013, Sharon is especially interested in working with those struggling with adjustment issues related to life transitions and immigration. Sharon's psychotherapy approach is grounded in principles of mindfulness, humanism, and the healing power of the creative process. More recently, she has been exploring meditation techniques through MBSR--Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction--and utilizes visualization techniques in her personal life and professional practice.
